Oughton and Hitchin residents are delighted and relieved this week. The previously unsafe alleyway linking Milestone Road to the Bedford Road Hitchin has now been fully repaired with an entire new fully tarmacked alleyway.
The alleyway was a prominent issue during the Oughton By-Election campaign in November 2016. However, despite promises from both District and County Councillors to ensure the alleyway was fully repaired, with the exception of the lighting, it never happened. It took a renewed social media campaign on 24th September 2017 together with huge publicity from both The Comet Newspaper and BBC Three Counties Radio from which it took just 6 weeks to achieve what elected representatives had been unable to do in nearly 2 years.
Pictured second from the top on the front page here is long standing Oughton resident Liz Whitelock, walking through the newly tarmacked alleyway on 29th October 2017. Liz never wavered in her persistence to ensure the alleyway was fully repaired. We also thank the Contractors Ringway who have done an excellent job. What was once a notorious unsafe alleyway is now a safe alleyway for both residents and pedestrians.
